CEPHER Life Blog The 3 Gaps in Most Family PlansBy Shane Armstrong | October 10, 2026 |

Every family financial plan has three gaps. Most people only cover one of them. I see this constantly in my work. Business owners. Homeowners. Hardworking folks who want this explained simply. A family saves for retirement, maybe has some life insurance through work, and figures the plan is solid. Then one of the three gaps shows up, and it turns out the plan was never complete. Gap 1: Dying too soonThis is the one most people think about. If you die while your family still depends on your income, the mortgage, the groceries, and the kids' futures all fall on whoever is left. Life insurance fills this gap. But here is the problem: most families are underinsured here too. A common workplace policy covers one or two years of salary. That is not enough for a family with twenty years of bills ahead. If you own your home, that mortgage does not die with you. If you run a business, there is no company to keep the lights on. Your family or your partners carry the full weight. Gap 2: Not being able to workThis is the gap almost nobody plans for. An illness or injury that keeps you out of work for months or years drains savings fast. Your bills do not pause when your paycheck does. Disability protection is the coverage that keeps your family afloat in that scenario, and it is the least owned of the three. A serious health event is far more likely than most people realize. And if you are a business owner, this one hits double. There is no employer plan to fall back on, and the business usually needs you working to keep paying its own bills. Gap 3: Living a long timeThe third gap is outliving your money. A couple that retires at 65 can reasonably expect one of them to reach 90 or beyond. That is twenty-five or more years of retirement to fund. The right life insurance and long-term care planning make sure the money lasts as long as you do, so your kids are not footing the bill. For homeowners, this can also mean making sure the house passes to your family free and clear, not as a debt. Check your own plan honestlyThree questions. Answer them honestly:
