What Your Job's Life Insurance Doesn't Do

If your only life insurance is the policy through your job, this one matters.

A lot of working people assume they are covered. Their employer gives them a life insurance policy, so they check the box and move on. Here is the problem. That policy was built for the employer, not for your family. It does a few things well and leaves out everything that counts most.

It covers one to two years of your salary. That is it.

Most employer policies pay one or two times your annual salary. If you make $80,000, your family gets $80,000 or $160,000. That sounds like real money. Then they pay the mortgage. Then they cover a year or two of bills. Then it is gone.

It does not pay off the house. It does not cover college for the kids. It does not replace your income for the years your family still needs it. A homeowner with a $300,000 mortgage is still leaving a $300,000 debt behind. A business owner with employees and loans is leaving those problems behind too.

It ends the day you leave the job

Here is the part most people never think about. That coverage is tied to the job. Quit, get laid off, retire, or get let go, and the coverage goes away. Usually the same day.

Now you are older. Maybe you have health issues you did not have at 30. Buying a new policy from scratch costs more, and if your health changed, it can cost a lot more. The years when your family needs the protection most are the years it gets most expensive to start over.

Your family's protection should not depend on your employment status. A layoff is already hard. Finding out your life insurance ended the same day makes it worse.

You cannot take it with you

Some group plans let you convert to an individual policy when you leave. Almost nobody does it, because the conversion rates are terrible. They are priced for the carrier, not for you. And the process usually gives you a short window to decide, right when you are dealing with a job change.

That is the design of the product. It was never meant to be your family's real safety net. It was meant to be a benefit on a list.

Own your coverage instead

A policy you own follows you no matter where you work. You keep it when you change jobs. You keep it when you retire. Nobody can take it away because your boss made a different decision.

Owning it also lets you get the right amount. One to two years of salary is not a plan. A plan covers the mortgage, the income your family lives on, and the years your kids are still depending on you. If you own a business, a plan also covers the loans and the people counting on your company.

Three questions to ask yourself

  1. If you lost your job tomorrow, would your family still have life insurance?
  2. Would the payout pay off your house, or just cover a year of bills?
  3. Are you counting on a policy your employer controls, or one you own?
